Thomas Gillmer Custom Pocket Trawler — a rare, one-of-a-kind coastal cruiser designed by a legendary naval architect and built for a lifetime of comfortable, low-maintenance voyaging.
This boat was designed by Thomas Gillmer — naval architect and former chairman of the Marine Engineering department at the US Naval Academy, and the mind behind the Southern Cross and Allied Seawind lines. He designed this trawler specifically for his own retirement cruising, and it was built at the Martha's Vineyard Boatyard and launched in 1983. The hull is essentially a sailboat hull, which means it's seaworthy, efficient, and easy on fuel at its natural cruising speed of around 6 knots. She also carries a mainsail and jib for use when conditions allow.
The pilothouse is the heart of this boat: protected, comfortable, and offering excellent visibility in any weather. Whether I'm navigating a foggy Maine morning or watching the moon rise over open water, it's a genuinely enjoyable place to be. Below, there's an ample stateroom with long, comfortable berths, a vacuum-flush toilet, and a hot shower. The galley is equipped with a 2-burner Origo alcohol stove and shore power via a 30-amp cord. The engine sits conveniently under the pilothouse sole and is easily accessed by lifting a large panel — no crawling around in tight spaces.
