1989 Ta Chiao CT 56 Robert Perry Ketch | Offshore-Ready Liveaboard with Lithium, Solar, and Watermaker
As seen on Sailing Doodles
This 1989 Ta Chiao CT 56 is offered For Sale By Owner (FSBO) on FSBOAT. She is the boat Bobby White has sailed and lived aboard on the Sailing Doodles YouTube channel, and she is equipped for long passages and extended time at anchor.
Designed by Robert Perry and built by Ta Chiao in Taiwan, the CT 56 is a heavy, full-keel cruising ketch built for comfort at sea. The split rig keeps each sail smaller and easier to handle for a shorthanded crew, and the hull gives a steady, predictable motion offshore. Below decks, the layout is set up for living aboard, not weekend trips.
What separates this boat from most of her generation is the electrical refit. An 800 Ah Victron lithium bank, Victron inverter/charger, approximately 1,300 watts of solar through two Victron MPPT controllers, and a 7 kW Northern Lights generator allow weeks away from shore power without rationing. Add a Rainman watermaker, three air conditioners, a washer and dryer, and two refrigerators, and she is ready for the Caribbean or the Pacific.
Accommodations
The saloon is large and comfortable, with a dining table that seats eight. The U-shaped galley opens directly to the saloon.
The full-beam aft cabin has a raised queen berth, four transom windows, and a large overhead hatch for airflow. It also offers two large hanging lockers, extensive cabinet storage, and a makeup counter with seat. The ensuite head includes a bathtub and an electric freshwater-flush toilet.
The forward cabin has two berths, one double and one single, with a separate forward head and shower. Forward of that, a captain’s cabin with two bunks is currently used as a workshop and storage space.
